DTM ´Switch on a Chip´ Made Possible by Agreement between Net Insight and Toshiba Electronics

25 November, 1998
Net Insight and Toshiba Electronics have signed a long-term agreement that is to cover several technology generations. The agreement guarantees Net Insight´s capability to manufacture its chip-based switch products in high volume, beginning with a switch core which will be marketed separately under the product name Twintin.
Net Insight is the world leader in DTM (Dynamic synchronous Transfer Mode) networking equipment. DTM technology permits the integration of voice, data and streaming video traffic in a single network with greatly increased capacity and quality. Net Insight´s DTM products create new business opportunities for IT and telecommunications companies world-wide.

Recently, the company announced a joint testing agreement with ICG Telecom Group, one of the largest operators in the North American market. ICG Telecom Group and Net Insight will together evaluate DTM products and their ability to fulfil the capacity requirements of American customers. Its agreement with Toshiba Electronics further reinforces Net Insight´s international reach.

Net Insight´s business concept is to develop products based on DTM technology, and the company´s next product generation will be based on chips (i.e., ASICs - Application Specific Integrated Circuits) developed in co-operation with Toshiba Electronics. Net Insight´s intent is to offer its DTM chip separately on a licence basis to suppliers world-wide in order to quickly reach a very broad market and to accelerate the international standardisation of DTM technology. At the same time, Net Insight will market its own chip-based networking products.

Net Insight has recently begun to collaborate on chip design with Toshiba. Development has advanced very rapidly with the cutting-edge design tool "Build Gates", which is marketed by Cadence, and has confirmed that there is adequate space on a single chip for the entire DTM switching circuitry.

"One of the world´s leading chip producers, following its own technical evaluation, has now chosen to invest its resources in our company, and this will allow us to achieve high-volume, low cost production," says Bengt Olsson, CEO of Net Insight.

"Net Insight´s DTM technology has significant advantages over existing network solutions, and it fits in well with Toshiba´s market strategy, which entails continued growth within the fast growing networking segment. Through Toshiba´s dRAMASICTM technology, DTM is being given an even sharper competitive edge," says Staffan Persson, Toshiba project leader.
