Net Insight signs significant order with Metrocom to deploy DTM technology in St. Petersburg

12 April, 2000
Metrocom, one of the leading fiber network operators in the city of St.Petersburg, has agreed to purchase Net Insight´s Nimbra switches for their metropolitan network. The switches will initially be used for telephony and data services for a large bank. Metrocom is the first Russian operator to deploy a DTM network.
Metrocom is a member of the MirTelecom Association, which consists of five operators in Russia. Metrocom provides bandwidth services to a number of international service providers in St.Petersburg, including Sonera, Telia and AT&T among others. The initial configuration comprises of one central Nimbra One switch equipped with Ethernet and E1 modules and five Nimbra 220 access switches, which will be placed in the premises of a large bank in St.Petersburg. Metrocom has an option to purchase five Nimbra One switches and ten Nimbra 220 access switches within the terms of the agreement.

"With Net Insight´s Nimbra products, we can offer our rapidly growing customer base simply better services more cost-efficiently. Security assurances in a DTM network, as well as the ability to provide Quality of Service, make the solution especially well suited for the more demanding customers. This is a strategic investment for competitiveness," said Ravil Khalikov, General Manager of Metrocom. "The advanced features and high cost-efficiency facilitates our efforts to be the number-one choice for our customers in the area of St.Petersburg."

"Over 2000 kilometers of fiber is being deployed each month in Russia, making it an enormous market opportunity for us. We are very pleased to have established a close relationship with one of the leading service providers in that marketplace," said Bengt Olsson, CEO of Net Insight.

The network is scheduled for initial deployment during this summer, with commercial services to be launched towards the end of the year. In conjunction with this agreement, Net Insight and Metrocom agree to aim for certification of Net Insight´s Nimbra products in Russia.

About DTM
Net Insight is the leading worldwide provider of Dynamic synchronous Transfer Mode (DTM) networking solution. Net Insight´s DTM switches, access devices, and ASIC chip offer service providers carrier-class integrated data, voice, and real-time video with guaranteed quality of service (QoS). DTM-which combines a dynamic time slot mechanism and fast circuit set up-solves the QoS problem by imposing dynamic bandwidth on circuits, as opposed to circuit emulation over packet technology. This unique combination of dynamic bandwidth and end-to-end QoS, means DTM is optimized as both a direct voice, video, or data connection, as well as a broadband carrier network.

About Net Insight
