The testing took place between CBC/Radio-Canada’s Toronto and Montreal operations, using a combination of dark fiber and OC-3 capacity between the two cities with a DTM-based Nimbra One access switch located at each CBC/Radio-Canada facility. Each Nimbra One was equipped with modules for Ethernet, E1, DVB-ASI and OC-3. The test equipment used an automated control plane for easy provisioning and maintenance, with enhanced GMPLS functionality for load balancing, mesh protection and multicast provisioning.
By combining 100% QoS with maximum network utilization and multicast, DTM provides a network with superior efficiency. As a result, broadcasters would benefit from significantly reduced CAPEX and OPEX. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) is currently standardizing DTM.
“I anticipate that DTM technology may provide the gateway towards remote production," says Anthony Caruso, Director of Technology and Systems, at CBC/Radio-Canada. “In addition, DTM transport technology has the characteristics required to make future broadcast networking more bandwidth efficient.”
The trial also represented the first phase of a partnership between Net Insight and Broadcast Systems and Equipment, Inc. (BSE), Canada’s leading supplier of broadcast hardware and software. BSE provided the Trilogy Voice over IP communications system that was used in the trial.
"Net Insight is pleased to announce that CBC/Radio-Canada successfully tested Net Insight´s DTM-based Nimbra platform," said Tomas Duffy, CEO of Net Insight. "These tests confirm to us the experience of an increasing number of leading broadcasters that the technology delivers an unbeatable combination of efficiency and QoS."
