This press release regards orders announced on May 6 and July 1 but without the customer’s name and details.
UPC Direct, a company of the UPC Group that is one of the leading broadband companies in Europe, is deploying Net Insight’s platform to build a new backhaul and distribution network between its major Central European cities. Having relied on satellite capacity, UPC Direct now takes a strategic step towards terrestrial networking services.
With Amsterdam as the main distribution hub, the new backhaul network will span the cities of Budapest, Prague and Bratislava to serve UPC Direct customers. For UPC Direct, a key requirement for choosing Net Insight’s platform was to improve the quality of the content distributed to their customers and to lower the cost of transmission. An additional benefit with the new network is UPC Direct can provision locally produced content, which is not available via satellite.
By utilizing Net Insight’s next generation SDH/SONET-based Nimbra platform, UPC Direct’s soon-to-be operational terrestrial network will carry multiple program streams over DVB-ASI as well as Data over Ethernet.
“While keeping costs in mind, improving the quality of the content we provide to our customers is of major importance to our business. By choosing Net Insight’s solution for our transition over to terrestrial backhauling and distribution, these requirements were fulfilled as well as providing a future proof solution for capacity upgrades and future expansion,” says Balazs Sranko, Managing Director of UPC Direct.
While owned by UPC Direct, the Digital Media Centre (DMC) in Amsterdam will operate the network while Priority Telecom, a Telecommunications company within the UPC Group, will provide the capacity for the fully redundant network.
Video content is the core of our daily business and to be able to guarantee that the quality of our services is maintained all through the process, including reaching our customers is critical. Net Insight’s Nimbra platform can provide us with these capabilities. Furthermore, the reliability and simplicity of operating the network means we do not have to spend expensive resources to constantly monitor the quality of the transmission,” says Ferry Verheul, Senior Broadcast Engineer at the DMC.
“After receiving this order recently from UPC Direct, we’re excited to be in the final stages of having our platform deployed. We see an increased interest from satellite operators needing to deploy new distribution and backhauling networks. With UPC Direct’s choice of Net Insight as a supplier we further strengthen our position as technology leader for terrestrial media networks,” says Tomas Duffy, CEO of Net Insight.
