4 x DS3/E3 Trunk/Access Module

The 4 x DS3/E3 combined Trunk and Access Module can be configured to either act as a DS3/E3 trunk module, or a DS3/E3 access module. The trunk mode offers four 45 or 34 Mbps interfaces for transporting data with 100% Quality of Service. It enables multi-service operation with guaranteed QoS and high utilization over standard DS3/E3 connections or leased lines. In the Access mode, the module supports all the standard functions of the Nimbra platform, including multicast, fault and performance monitoring and fast 1+1 protection switching.

Used as a trunk, the 4 x DS3/E3 Module’s four bi-directional can support up to a total of 170 Mbps (DS3) / 131 Mbps (E3) of payload to and from the board. It can carry aggregated voice, video, and data services over low cost DS3 or E3 leased lines. Operators provide many different options to carry DS3/E3 services; over their legacy PDH network, using DS3/E3 interfaces in their SONET/SDH network, or over DS3/E3 copper-based transmission systems.

In both trunk and access mode the board can be configured for either DS3 or E3 operation, for the access mode E3 or DS3 can be configured per port.

  • Four standards compliant DS3/E3 ports
  • Transport of any mix of audio, data and compressed video streams with 100% QoS
  • Configurable support for either DS3 and E3 with simple software controls
  • Very high bandwidth utilization with less than 3% link overhead
  • Max payload per port of 42.496 Mbps (DS3) or 32.768 Mbps (E3)
  • Support for point-to-point, ring and mesh network topologies
  • Bandwidth effective mapping of up to 4 E3 access connections to 1 STM-1 trunk
  • 1 + 1 protection switching with <50 ms switching time.
  • Hot swap
  • ITU-T G.826 based performance monitoring

The Module can aggregate lower tier traffic with the traffic from the attached node due to the ability of the Nimbra One and Nimbra 340 systems to switch traffic to, from or through the node in non-blocking manner.
