Households to get access to broadband services through new Swedish technology venture

13 July, 1999
Net Insight and Bredbandsbolaget, a subsidiary of the listed company Framtidsfabriken, are jointly going to afford households the opportunity of accessing network services in a much faster way. Net Insight´s DTM technology, which is attracting increasing attention, will be one of the underlying technologies used when Bredbandsbolaget begins this year to sell fast, high quality Internet connectivity.
Net Insight´s DTM technology enables Bredbandsbolaget´s customers to obtain access to the latest services that place high-quality demands on networks. This multi-service solution transfers services such as IP telephony, real-time video, interactive games, TV broadcasts and the Internet itself. Requirements for high-speed increase with the number of users of services on the backbone network, the network transporting the collective traffic. This is where DTM technology plays an important role as it enables the feature known as "multicasting" to be utilised. The network guarantees high quality in addition to bandwidth, which means that videos can be re-played without jumps, stops or flickering. This is achieved because the DTM network guarantees what is known as "constant delay", which ensures that all pictures reach the viewer in the correct order.

Bredbandsbolaget´s MD, Jan Nilsson, says: "Several of the most interesting areas of use for a broadband network involve video or video telephony, which place quite different demands on a network in contrast to those of "normal" computer traffic. Bredbandsbolaget sees DTM as an opportunity to obtain real-time performance for prices and price trends similar to those of Gigabit Ethernet. A DTM network with such characteristics would be ideal for implementing Bredbandsbolaget´s vision of "broadband to the people". It should create LANs and WANs that are almost free of bottlenecks. Video and video telephony can be sent and received without disturbance at prices everybody can afford. Bredbandsbolaget has therefore decided to work with Net Insight to investigate the possibility of using DTM technology in backbone, metropolitan/city and residential networks."

"Together with Bredbandsbolaget, we will be coming closer to the end users of metropolitan/city networks, our core market. Bredbandsbolaget has one of the most interesting concepts for offering new services to the home - services the market could only dream of before," says Bengt Olsson, CEO of Net Insight.
