HP, Net Insight and i3 micro are launching an IP-based metropolitan network solution for delivering TV, telephony and the Internet via a single connection in the home. This guarantees good quality traffic regardless of network load and the number of users simultaneously connected.
“Operators can now offer realtime-based services such as TV, video on demand, games on demand and pay per view as well as rapid Internet access and telephony, all via a single infrastructure. Together we offer a package ranging from hardware to support and supervision that represents a cost-effective solution for operators and end customers”, says HP Services business manager Stefan Bergdahl.
The solution is based on increasing the utilization of existing fiber-based metro networks without having to resort to overdimensioning of capacity to prevent overload. Sending traffic via separate protected channels doesn’t affect realtime-critical services such as TV and telephony even when there is a heavy load of Internet traffic. The IP-based metro network solution is scaleable, which makes it easy and cost-effective to upgrade and expand as more users become connected. It also reduces the labor and other costs involved in maintenance, operation and support.
“The more traffic a network can handle, the higher the operator’s potential earnings. The combination of optimum capacity utilization and guaranteed service quality creates the right conditions for operators to generate new revenue”, says Net Insight regional manager Peter Sergel.
“A metro network solution based on IP meets a whole variety of requirements for interactive services to the home, but operators will initially offer traditional services such as TV, telephony and the Internet. Only later will these be followed by services that take full advantage of the interactivity potential”, says i3 micro marketing manager Jonas Dahllöf.
i3 micro products that connect the telephones, computers and TV sets in each flat or house are connected to an HP Procurve switch which is situated in the same building or nearby and is linked to a primary network solution from Net Insight. An operator with i3 servers, together with equipment from HP, for transmitting TV signals, video on demand and telephone services is then connected to the primary network. HP is also responsible for operation, support and project management.
Telephony based on IP doesn’t mean that users have to get themselves a new IP telephone. The box they have at home is a terminal adapter that converts digital telephone signals to analog, so users can continue using their ordinary telephone.
The solution is modular and can therefore be purchased as a whole or piecemeal and can also be used for access via IP-based ADSL infrastructure.
