Market
Satellite networks are perfect for large scale distribution and for transmission to remote areas. Satellite operators must manage many different types of signals to support datacom, telecom, program contribution, and television distribution requirements. The full capabilities of satellite networks can only be achieved, however, with the right equipment on the ground to handle those signals and connect them terrestrial networks. Quality of Service is always an issue, particularly in audio and video contribution applications. Net Insight’s engineers designed the Nimbra system to work extremely well in satellite applications, with unprecedented QoS and capacity utilization. It’s no wonder that major satellite operators worldwide have standardized on Nimbra equipment.
Challenges
Satellite capacity is relatively expensive and limited compared to terrestrial fiber based transport why it is important to utilize the capacity as efficient as possible. Investment in connections between the client and the uplink also constitute a significant investment mainly because it it typical long distance links and that a last mile access is needed. It is therefore very good to introduce as many services as possible on the costly last mile.
Efficient usage of the satellite capacity and the uplink is a challenge. With a fiber based network connecting clients and uplinks makes it possible to direct client traffic to the least loaded uplink. It is also possible to avoid multiple satellite hops or to do direct connection client-to-client in the terrestrial network.
Satellite connections is both on-demand and permanent why it is important for easy and rapid provisioning of client connections to support the existing business models.
Net Insight offering
The Nimbra MSR platform can handle every service you need to carry, including video, audio, datacom and telecom. It’s easy to connect Nimbra systems to virtually any type of leased capacity, dark fiber or WDM interface, including 10 GE, 10/100/1000 Base-T, Gigabit Ethernet, E3/DS3 and STM-1/4/16/64.
The Nimbra 360 supports Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, ASI, AES/EBU, E1/T1, E3/DS3 and STM-1/OC3 connections. Its flexibility, reliability and compact design make it the perfect choice for client premises installations. It can connect to the customer premises using IP capacity, fiber, SDH or PDH connections.
The Nimbra MSR platform’s built-in optical control plane is fully integrated with NimbraVision, our Network Management System. The control plane works with the NMS to support automatic configuration, service provisioning, protection, and restoration. NimbraVision offers point-and-click provisioning for on-demand services as well as extensive network monitoring functions.
